"Basic and Supportive Treatments in the Management of Temporomandibular Disorders"
Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are issues frequently encountered in the clinical practice of dentists. For TMD to be effectively treated, dentists must have a sufficient understanding of its etiology, diagnosis, and differential diagnoses. This presentation will discuss the clinical and radiographic findings of TMD, examination, diagnosis, and basic and supportive treatment options. The fabrication of occlusal splints, the primary basic treatment option, will be demonstrated on a model. Information will be provided on supportive treatments such as dry needling, local anesthesia injection, cold/hot compress, and pharmacotherapy. The role of botulinum toxin injection into the masseter and/or temporal muscles, which has been frequently preferred in recent years, will be discussed in clinical practice and scientific literature.
